| "Cartooning
Prodigy Completes 38 Comic Books" |
Jan
1993 |
The very first press
appearance of my life, when I was just 12. My
photo appeared on the front page of Friday
Weekly, a Chinese-language student paper,
with a full page write-up on page 3.

| "Top
Students Stretch Wings To Purse Dreams" |
Jul
2000 |
This appeared after
I won an Institutional Medal in Singapore Polytechnic.
(no, not all cartoonists are half-witted school-dropouts)
I was interviewed by Lian
He Wan Bao (a Chinese evening daily)
along with 6 other medalists, to glean
more of our talents and motivations outside academia.
My
story was chosen to represent the entire batch,
and appeared in a 3/4-page article.

"Interview
With Johnny Tay..." |

May 2003 |
Two months before
this, I commenced my journey into self-publishing.
My university's student magazine got wind of it
and ran a 2-page feature interview.

"No
Publisher? Do It Yourself" |
19
Aug 2003 |
After a 10-year disappearance,
this article marked my return to the mainstream
news radar. It ran on the 1st page of Home News
on the Sunday Times.
The 1/2 page article centered on how more people
here were turning to self-publishing, stuck a
few short quotes from me and another self-publisher,
and concluded with snide retorts from established
publishers.

"Flying
Castles, Sailors, Robot Anema & E-Retailers" |
02
Sept 2003 |
My alma mater, Singapore
Polytechnic, acquired feature space on the Straits
Times (Singapore) to publize a commemorative
event. I was profiled along with 3 other alumni
in a sub-segment.

"Anema-Age
Of The Robots 1 & 2" |
Nov
2003 |
Letter
of support from Ministry Of Education,
Singapore. I had intended to market Anema directly
to schools, and this would prove an invaluable
endorsement.
However,
the time and effort involved was too immense for
one person, and I stopped after a short tour.

An
excellent interview with M.A.G.E. (Manga.Anime.
Games. Experience), a top local magazine which
showcased comics and related stuff.

| "Rise
Of The Dot.Comics" |
04
Jul 2004 |
Another
feature in the Sunday Times,
on a write-up profiling the rise of webcomics
worldwide. My long interview was edited to a misery
paragraph, which just summarized why I turned
to webcomics.
You
can read the full interview right here though!

| "Comic
Relief" |
Aug
2004 |
I
was the subject of a miscellaneous article on
LIME Entertainment Magazine,
Singapore. It disappointingly
portrayed me as an irrational freak who
feared robots taking over the world.
Throughout the interview I stressed that Anema
was not a robot sci-fi story, and wanted the article
to focus on the struggles of being a cartoonist
in Singapore. The interviewer advised that her
readers preferred a 'quirky' and 'entertaining'
piece...

| "No
Publisher? No problem." |
Aug
2005 |
Another feature on
the Straits Times, this time in the 'Youththink'
section.
This was a generic article on young people who
have self-published their books. Once again my
long interview was ruthlessly edited to pittance.
