Here are some most-asked questions
about Anema Online, so I won’t have to keep
repeating my answers in email...
How frequent do you upload
comics?
The series has ended. I will keep Anema Online
up for the world to enjoy. I used to load 2 long
pages per week - that's 5 A4 colour pages.
Why are some comics in
Flash and others un-click-able?
Putting them in Flash and protecting them with
my own Copyright Array prevents rogue publishers
from printing my work illegally. Ditto for the
'no-right-click' feature in later strips.
How can I help?
Recommend Anema Online to all your friends, or
even write to magazines/ newspapers to do a feature/review!
You can even buy ad space in the site, and give
that space to some charity or write a personal
message there.
Isn’t Anema like
Muppets vs Transformers?
It’s like saying Lord Of The Rings is stupid
because it ‘merely’ involves lots
of swordfighting and sorcery in order to destroy
some ‘dumb’ ring thingy.
You should learn to draw
like (insert popular American/Japanese comic title
here).
Why can’t we all be first-rate versions
of ourselves, rather than second-rate versions
of other people?
The “evil robot rebellion”
has been overused in stories like Terminator,
Matrix…etc. So is the struggle between good
vs evil. There is nothing new or creative about
the story.
That’s what many readers thought when they
read the first few chapters. But Anema is really
about the Anemals. The Robots appear for only
20% of the time. So it’s not exactly a typical
robot flick.
The battle between good and evil is one of the
foundations of this very Universe. There will
always be stories to tell about this topic.
A good analogy is the topic of ‘life’.
Would you say that life is worthless because everyone
has it? Or would it be precious because you can
choose to live yours differently?
Do you have a moral or
political agenda?
It’s a great thing to include moral lessons
in your stories. If you can entertain and spread
wisdom at the same time, go for it. My method
of teaching morals is slightly different from
other books. Instead of having FD say, “Today’s
lesson is…”, I let FD experience something,
and let readers figure out what the lesson is
about.
Politics? In Singapore? You want to get me in
jail??
Any advice for aspiring
comic artists?
The biggest hurdle I see in aspirers is most
can draw great standalone art, but not sequence
art. It doesn’t matter if you can draw a
Mona Lisa- if you want a comics career, you’ll
have to draw Mona Lisa from all angles and hundreds
of times to tell a story. Most studios, when recruiting
artists, prefer those who can draw sequence art.
So get started today! From now on, no more sketching
or standalone art. Everything you draw will be
sequential and tell a story/scene. You can use
the lamest stories, as long as you practice how
to use pictures to tell it.
Why did you stop?
I've spent too much time doing one type of comic,
and want to try other things. What's more, I wouldn't
want to be typecast as a "robots and furries"
author.
I'm working on an exciting new title. It'll be
as radical from Anema as Anema is radical from
other comics!
When will you resume the
series?
Not certain at all. But as one fan wrote, the
story is too good to be ignored! So one day I
will definitely complete the series.
How many chapters are there,
really?
I’d like to keep everyone in suspense on
this- it makes you wonder just when the story
will end. But I’ll give a clue- Chapter
18 is around the half-way point.
